Special Occasion Dresses

I know many fashion experts have said that an LBD is a must-have item in every woman's closet as it can take you from day to night (and it can), but it's just not for me. I save my conservative black dresses for the office. When it comes to special occasions, I opt for fun and flirty dresses that can also stand the test of time (at least for a few years because I plan to get my money’s worth and wear them more than just once!) I want to be unique, maybe even stand out a little. No, I am not an attention whore lol. But seriously, nothing worse than arriving at a special event to find myself wearing the same dress as another person…or simply to blend in with the sea of black dresses.

I usually (always?) buy my pants and skirts in darker colors, but for everything else, I tend to gravitate towards the lighter side. Same go for cocktail dresses. All the dresses in this post are from BCBG, with the exception of the powder pink dress, which is from Diane Von Furstenburg. I find that BCBG dresses are more petite-friendly when compared to other brands like Laundry by Shelli Segal, ABS by Allen Schwartz, Nicole Miller etc...

Although BCBG is on the smaller side, oftentimes its smallest size is still a bit big on me. For the green dress above, I did a little diy stitching at the bust area underneath my armpits to keep it holding up nicely. For the yellow dress below, I wanted to wear it as a strapless, but there was no way it would stay on so I had to forego that option and keep the spaghetti straps.

And this lavender dress is particularly special to me. I wore it on my first "official" date with the bf more than 2.5 years ago (although we've gone on a few dates before that, I guess to him they were not official grrrr). He invited me to his friend's wedding...and I'm sure as soon as he saw me in this dress, he knew he couldn't let me go muahahahaha...

I adore the open back but I have never worn it like that. A bit too daring for me so I always asked my mom to stitch me up about half way...

Oh do you like my little beige clutch? I'll be giving away this brand new BCBG satin bow clutch (sold here) later this week so please stay tune. I'm not sure how to do all this giveaway stuff yet so I gotta figure it out first hehe.

What are some of your favorite brands for special occasion dresses?

  2. I notice a pastel theme going on here, and I approve!! =D I love the green and the lavender one.....Ohmigosh, the LAVENDER ONE!!! AHHHH!! Can't get over how pretty that color is!!! ^_________^

  3. Pastel colors suit you! I'm a fan of colorful dresses too for special occasions, which doesn't really go with my love for colorful shoes, haha. But I'll make them work somehow! I own a BCBG dress but have found sizing to be an issue sometimes as well. I feel like I would own more if the price is more affordable... even though they can be found on sale quite often.

  4. I love all your dresses but my most favorite is the first one. I am with you on opting to different colors than black for special occasions. In my culture, black is mainly for sad event like funeral so you won't see anyone in all black dress at a wedding.

  5. Your dresses are absolutely adorable! I love the first one and the green one! I absolutely agree that these top the LBD--at least, for me. But then, I love color. ;)

  6. fash boulevard: i stop by your site quite often ;) it's so fun following your posts on celeb fashion :)

lemon: awww thanks! i didn't even notice the pastel thing, i just thought no black no back no black lol.

cee: i get most of my dresses on sale and ebay. original price for bcbg is definitely steep!

nelah: i really like the first dress too but i wish it was a bit shorter. all the beadings make it a little heavy. now i can imagine how heavy a wedding gown would be!

kerrie: thank you! i think an LBD can give a more sophisticated look but i like to go for fun and flirty. definitely all depends on taste. i'm glad you like colors too :)

  7. What pretty colors! I've yet to find a brand I like for special occasion that fits small-busted people like me, so I love these kinds of blog posts for ideas where to shop :) DVF makes small dresses? or did you alter it to fit? I'm excited about the giveaway! I've been looking for a cream-colored evening bag ;)

  9. hi Olyvia,

none of the dresses were altered except for the little diy i mentioned. i'm not sure how dvf runs because the one shown is my only dress from that brand. i would say that it's a little bigger than bcbg (you can see the length on me...i don't like it passed my knees). sue wong also has some really nice dresses. i adore alice + olivia too but haven't bought anything from them yet. Elle from "fast food and fast fashion" has though so perhaps you can check with her :)

all the brands mentioned are a little pricey, i would never buy dresses from them at full price. but they are very well-made so with a good sale/discount, they are definitely worth it!

  16. I wish I had occasions to wear such lovely dresses as yours! But I do some window shopping for special occasion dresses and I love how alice + olivia, winter kate, milly, and gryphon fit. It always depends on the style, but it's nice to know that we're not sized out of amazing special occasion dresses. =)
